Getting better at marketing
Marketing is a simple idea. You decide who you want to talk to and what you want to say to them. But simple is not the same as easy. Marketing can be hard to do well.
It doesn’t have to be though. It isn’t inherently complicated. You simply need to learn the core principles and the theories that underpin the discipline of marketing. Unfortunately, these often get overlooked. Or rather, they get overshadowed. The widespread emphasis on methods and techniques leaves little room for principles and theories.
Marketers typically spend too much time on the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ and too little time on the ‘why’. This needs to change.
“As to methods there may be a million and then some, but principles are few. The person who grasps principles can successfully select their own methods. The person who tries methods, ignoring principles, is sure to have trouble” Harrington Emerson (1853 – 1931)
